Frost Valley YMCA Master Plan
O’Boyle, Cowell, Blalock & Associates, Inc. (OCBA) provided site master planning services for the Frost Valley YMCA. Located two hours outside of New York City in the Catskill Mountains, and providing a variety of day, resident and specialty camps; retreat options; and outdoor experiences for school, non-profit, and international groups; Frost Valley serves as the flagship camp for the YMCA of the USA.
Faced with the challenge of two site entrances, an overlap of day and resident camp program areas, and limited opportunities for facility expansion on the steep mountain slopes, the Frost Valley leadership retained the OCBA team to develop a plan to guide the future of camp development. OCBA team members visited camp during the summer resident and day camp session, then conducted a three-day on-site charrette in late fall when the facilities were being used by several smaller groups to gain a full understanding of the overlap of program needs.
The resulting master plan proposes a reconfiguration of camp roads to reduce conflicts with pedestrians and facilitate the development of future cabin villages.
