OCBA was invited to partner with Fishbeck for the design and documentation of Western Michigan University’s Pedestrian Greenspace. The project scope included removal of a dead-end leg of East Michigan Ave and conversion into a pedestrian space extending the existing mall corridor between Sangren Hall and the Student Center. OCBA developed initial concepts, led campus input with students and staff, then developed landscape and furnishing design documentation in tandem with Fishbeck’s civil and electrical work.

The design features a bold archway signifying the entrance to campus which then opens into parallel paths along the former roadway. Seating terraces framed by outcropping stone and cast-in-place retaining walls carry design elements and materials from elsewhere on campus. Flexible greenspace replaces the parking lot and roadway near the Tree of Knowledge icon.
